Diopside is from the pyroxene family of minerals found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. It shows colors in green, yellow, light blue, colorless, brown, or black.
Diopside has several gem-quality varieties, including chrome diopside, a deep green, and violane diopside, a light to deep blue or purple. Another variety used in cabochon form is black diopside with asterism, or star effect.
Chrome diopside is known as the Russian emerald.
This is a rare variety of diopside that contains chrome and has a deep green color. Russia began exporting it with great success worldwide. Because chrome is typical of very expensive gemstones such as emerald and tsavorite, it became a popular alternative. The main deposit is in Russia, but our pieces come from a small deposit found in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Violan is a purple variety of diopside, also with violet or light blue hues. It is a translucent to opaque material with a marbled appearance that is often used for ornamental objects.
It is found only in the Prabornaz mine in the Italian Alps. This is a depleted old manganese mine famous for its many typicals rare minerals. Rarest between the rare is violan in quartz found just once in a small vein, few years ago.
And finally, black star diopside. This variety can occur in brownish-black, greenish-black, and black itself. It comes from India and is very well-known. When cut as a cabochon, it shows a clear asterism with a four-pointed star.
