Rutilated Quartz is a fascinating gemstone, known for its striking inclusions that look like strands of gold or threads of light trapped inside.

Rutile is the more common inclusion in quartz crystals and is present in many deposits. Most of the Rutilated Quartz varieties comes from Brazil, from the states of Minas Gerais and Bahia.

Normal” rutilated Quartz is a golden hairy variety with the Rutile fibers disordered inside the quartz. When the Rutile needles are oriented in parallel grow, a beautiful cat’s eye variety can be cut.

The beauty and the value of rutilated quartz depends on the quantity of the inclusions and on its color. Grey rutile is less appreciated that the golden variety, but some attractive specimens can be produced, especially when is associated with Brookite crystals. More rare is the red Rutile and the best value can be reached for thick red Rutile crystals.

The variety called Sagenite is formed when a pattern of crossed Rutile crystals is present with angles of 60 degrees that is the twinning law of Rutile. An old material of brazilian Sagenite was famous for its green color.

The king of Rutile inclusion will probably remain the Star Rutile from Novo Horizonte, Bahia, where the star has six rays at the twinning angle and is epitactic above an Hematite blade crystal.
