Rose quartz can shows three types of optical effects: the so-called cat’s eye or chatoyancy, which is a luminous band that crosses the gem; the six-pointed asterism, which in rose quartz is due to tiny rutile inclusions oriented at 60 degrees to each other; and the third is diasterism. Rose quartz is the only stone that also exhibits the phenomenon of diasterism. This phenomenon results in a star effect when viewed against the light. Unlike asterisms, which are only visible in reflected light, this stone can exhibit two superimposed star effects.
Rose quartz gemstone with inclusions of other minerals is very interesting, given that it is a type of quartz that almost never has inclusions. In Brazil, quartz has been found with a type of acicular white inclusion, but not like the actinolite-tremolite series, which is quite common in quartz. These are unknown so far. We analyzed the inclusions, but the results are inconclusive, so we stay with the doubt. Raman analysis suggests a possible phyllosilicate, but we are not sure. This makes the stone even more intriguing.
