Phantom Quartz is a fascinating specimen whose internal inclusions in the form of layers or shadows look like images of a phantom inside the crystal.
If a quartz crystal during its growth is covered with a thin coating of another opaque mineral and then continues to grow incorporating the inclusion, we will have the formation of a phantom, that is, we will be able to see inside the crystal a halo with the same shape and orientation as the external crystal.
Unlike positive crystals, which have a random orientation and the included crystals and those surrounding them are two distinct crystals, the phantom represents an early stage of the same crystalline individual.
The most common phantoms are green or white chlorite and can be repeated in large quantities within the same crystal. However, many other minerals can be responsible for the formation of phantoms.
One type of phantom is the millefoglie structure, which has been attributed to the alteration of a crystal of another mineral within the quartz, probably feldspar and tourmaline.
