Libyan Glass is a beautiful yellow glass found in the Libyan Desert between Egypt and Libya.
It is a tektite, that is a glass that originated following the impact of a comet. Comets are ice meteorites and it is precisely the great abundance of water during the impact that causes the melting of terrestrial rocks in the crater area, in this case the quartz sands of the desert. These rocks sublimate at very high temperatures and cause a real shower of glass drops. After the fall and cooling, begins the chemical attack by the surface waters. This process, common to other tektites, is minimal for Libyan Glass. As the glass is unstable at room temperature, these tend to be dissolved. This is why there are only very few fields of tektites in the world and none very old.
CON CRISTOBALITA In this gemstones spherical cristobalite inclusions are found. They are due to devitrification process of the glass and its recrystallization in the form of a silica rich phase.
The impact of Libyan Glass is dated to around 28 m.a. associated with some small craters aligned across the border between Egypt and Libya in the Libyan Desert (BP and Oasis structures). The stones are quite widespread in a large area of elliptical shape.
Libyan Glass is often transparent and can be used to cut attractive gems. Only two types of tektites are in facet quality, Moldavite and Libyan Glass
They have been cut into pleasing gems since the time of the pharaohs. The Tutankhamun scarab set in the emperor’s breastplate is a splendid example. However, Libyan Glass was already known long ago and used in the Paleolithic to chip stone tools.
With its distinctive golden color and vitreous luster, this stone of cosmic origin is appreciated for its powerful transformative energy, making it a key stone in emotional and spiritual healing.
