From a strictly mineralogical point of view, grape agate is not really an agate, as it is not a banded chalcedony but a botryoidal one. However, the commercial name “grape agate” is widely used.
Grape agate is a botryoidal variety of chalcedony, with two clearly identifiable characteristics: its appearance as clusters of tiny grape-like spheres and its color, ranging from pale to deep purple, sometimes with inclusions of white, gray, green, or blue.
Most of the botryoidal chalcedony is white or gray. This is a truly odd material. It is from Manakarra Beach, Sulawesi, Indonesia.
