Iron is a common component of inclusions in quartz: in the form of oxides such as hematite or magnetite, in the form of hydroxides such as goethite or limonite, or in the form of sulfides such as pyrite and marcasite.
The exact mineralogical distinction between hematite and goethite is represented by the presence of water in goethite, but in real specimens where the crystals are included in quartz, this distinction is rather difficult and therefore the attribution of these inclusions is often made mainly on an optical basis. Both minerals are quite similar when found in acicular crystals.
Goethite usually forms small fibrous crystals, often grouped in small aggregates, of a bright golden yellow color.
Another form of goethite is that of a fracture-filling film. Just as manganese forms secondary dendrites in fractures, iron forms beautiful red and yellow halos in quartz fractures.
Goethite is common in amethyst quartz or light violet amethyst.
Varieties of quartz with goethite are found in numerous Brazilian localities associated with the numerous amethyst deposits present in several states: Bahia, Espirito Santo and Minas Gerais.
