In August 2004, a small deposit of a new quartz with a blue inclusion was discovered in Brazil. The deposit comes from the locality of São José da Batalha, Salgadinho, in the Brazilian state of Paraiba. The inclusions turned out to be of a rare copper mineral, gilalite (Cu5Si6O17·7H2O). However, having a color that resembles that of Paraiba tourmaline, many traders began to call it Paraiba Quartz to recall the much more expensive tourmaline, without however lying about the true location of origin.
Paraiba quartz has beautiful blue inclusions of the rare copper mineral gilalite (Cu5Si6O17·7H2O). It comes in two varieties, Medusa quartz and Paraiba quartz.
The most sought after is the so-called Bolinhas (small balls) also called Medusa quartz (jelly fish) which has small globular aggregates of fibrous crystals in the shape of a jellyfish.
The other variety is known as Paraiba quartz and is composed of fibrous gilalite crystals in thin layers that cover a ghost inside the quartz crystal. Cut stones can be completely light blue if the table is cut parallel to the quartz face or show an interesting bicolor when the stone is cut perpendicular to the ghost face.
The color is usually turquoise blue, but can be aqua green, more often both colors are present in the same sample. Some red spots can be due to the rare presence of micro dendrites of native copper.
The rough of these quartz has never allowed to produce collectible crystals, nor to cut collectible prisms so all the extracted material has been cut into gems. The very affordable price of these gems at the beginning made them very popular. Today the Bolinhas variety has reached decidedly high prices.
