Agate is a rock composed of generally banded chalcedony. Agate is the queen of gemstones, although its value today is not comparable to that of precious stones, its variety of shapes and colors has no equal. Today, over 6,000 varieties of agate are known, more than all other gems combined.
Agate is the first stone worked by man as a gem more than 9000 years ago, appreciated above all for its durability and resistance. The modern cut allows to enhance the color and pattern that these stones hide.
There are agates from many localities, but the most beautiful agates in the world are found in Mexico, India, Morocco, Argentina, Australia and the USA.
Feather Ridge Agate is a plume agate variety in a very translucent chalcedony with a wonderful combination of pink, peach, yellow and white colors.
Feather Ridge Claim is found in the area of Graveyard Point, in eastern Oregon, USA, an area rich in many different varieties of mostly white plume agate dikes. This claim is owned by Philip Stephenson.
The genesis of plumes in agates has been hypothesized to be bacterial in origin. It is the result of biomineralization by biofilms of extremophile bacteria. Living analogues have been discovered in a number of today’s environments.
The gelatinous consistency of the agate that was forming was a perfect substrate for the proliferation of these colonies within the agates.
So we can say that plumes are more a fossil than a mineral.
