The last of the blue-included quartz arrived in 2014 from the state of Bahia in the form of clear quartz crystals with beautiful inclusions of blue dumortierite. The dumortierite crystals are found lying at the base of the quartz crystals, often aggregated in small tufts called “carrapiche”. The best crystals of the first finds reached about ten centimeters in length and were completely filled with blue crystals and had a truly sensational appearance. These crystals today have reached dizzying prices.
The deposit is located in the Serra do Espinhaço near the Vaca Morta quarry, Boquira, 20 km northwest of Macaúbas, Bahia, Brazil, near the border with the state of Tocantins.
Shortly after the discovery, a real rush of miners found themselves digging in the area in search of fortune. Hordes of Chinese buyers moved in to grab the best pieces. Today, mining continues, but the quality is much lower, as dumortierite crystals are very small. However, the high prices these specimens fetch on the market continue to generate hope.
The color range of dumortierite ranges from colorless to sapphire blue, sometimes brown and yellow. Obviously, the most sought-after specimens are those with a beautiful blue color.
Dumortierite, unlike ajoite and gilalite, is a very common mineral and is not a copper mineral and owes its color to the presence of Al in the position of Fe3. In fact, it is a mineral that results from regional and contact metamorphism in rocks rich in aluminum at high temperatures.
Massive blue quartzites due to the inclusion of dumortierite are very common in the state of Bahia in Brazil and in Madagascar where they are excavated as building material in the form of blue granites.
Blue marbles are also present in the same areas, always due to inclusions of dumortierite. In these rocks, dumortierite is always microcrystalline and is not visible to the naked eye.
Therefore, the discovery of dumortierite in crystals is undoubtedly a novelty.
