Brookite is one of the three main polymorphic forms of TiO2, three minerals with the same composition but different structures, the other two being rutile and anatase. Brookite is the rarest of the three and usually occurs in the form of very fragile crystals of a beautiful red color.
It is a typical mineral of Alpine-type hydrothermal veins and is therefore often included in quartz. Most of the brookite included in quartz is closely associated with rutile, often silvery, more rarely golden, which covers the crystal and hides it.
The main deposit of a gem-quality quartz with inclusions of brookite associated with silvery rutile comes from the Diamantina area, in the Jequitinhonha Valley, between Gouveia and Corinto, in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
In this deposit, long tabular brookite crystals are often completely covered by long, thread-like, grey metallic rutile crystals. The rutile crystals or needles are found in epitactic association in the brookite and cross it at exact angles of 60 or 90 degrees.
The deposit is probably exhausted or at least not operational for some years. Despite the exceptional nature of the deposit, these specimens were traded at relatively low prices due to the grey rutile, an unattractive variety for the gem market.
Subsequently, in 2018, a new quartz deposit with brookite inclusions was discovered near Brumado in the state of Bahia in Brazil. Here, the brookite is usually clean and is rarely associated with short grey rutile needles. Brookite often occurs in aggregates of numerous crystals in fan-shaped associations.
Beautiful quartz brookites from Pakistan have appeared on the market, but production is more geared towards collectors’ specimens than gem-cutting. In these samples the brookite is generally free of rutile or, if present, the rutile is yellow.
