Biotite is a mineral from the mica group. Within quartz, it is distinguished as flat, foliaceous crystals whose colors are usually brown, reddish, black, and green due to the presence of iron in its composition.
Quartz with biotite is relatively common with dark-colored crystals, but they are rarely found in a rich green color, as in this case.
When included in quartz, it exhibits a characteristic lamellar shape, very similar to that of lithiophilite crystals. In general, biotite is more greenish and lithiophilite is more brownish, but altered biotites are also brown. A distinctive feature is that lithiophilite exhibits a network of curved microfractures at the edge of the crystal, unlike biotite.
In Brazil, where this specimen comes from, lamellar crystals of red biotite have been found associated with pyrite and marcasite.
