Aletai is a type IIIE-an iron meteorite from Xinjiang, China, first found in 1898.
The mass is composed of kamacite and taenite, with minor plessite, schreibersite and haxonite.
It shows a very nice Widmanstätten patterns, consisting of long alloy phases of ferronickel. The elongated crystal structure consists of a fine interlacing of kamacite and taenite bands.
On Earth, large crystals do not form in metals, but they can be found in meteorites, due to extremely slow cooling times (10 million years).
This fact is very important because it is the reason why a piece of meteorite cannot be reproduced with materials from Earth.
