The origin of these gemstones dates back to July 2006, quartz veins of a beautiful yellow-orange colour were found in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. Gemstones cut from this quartz are sold under the trade name Sunset Quartz.
Its unusual colour is due to the abundant presence of small needles several mm long of an unknown mineral, probably from the hornblende family.
Sunset Quartz is quite similar to Fire Opal, because the small diffuse inclusions give a beautiful Tyndall effect (fog), as in opalescence. The advantage is that quartz is much more resistant for jewellery purposes.
The discovery was made by the trader and prospector Jean-Claude Nydegger, in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. Only 5 kg of rough were produced in the first year and only small stones were cut, the largest being 19.5 cts.
Most of the rough was heated to 350 °C and an irreversible orange colouration appeared. The newly mined ore has many coloured portions, but its colour is very variable and so it was considered better to apply the heating process. The heat treatment helped to give it a more uniform colour.
Its warm tones evoking the colours of a sunset make this stone highly appreciated by jewellers, collectors and energy therapists.

- Guaranteed authenticity: This color exists in quartz, and under a microscope you can see a multitude of orange crystal needles. However, we cannot be 100% sure that these pieces have not been heat treated. As I mentioned in the description, this process is carried out on most of the rough material extracted. What we are 100% sure of is that it has not had irradiation treatment and that it is not artificial.

- Hardness: 7 (quartz) on the Mohs scale.
- Cut: Round cabochon cut with an average size of 6 mm and a height of 3.5 mm. Cut in Brazil.
